grouper fishing

Post by fishlady »

Is there anywhere that you can find grouper without going so far out (from) St. Marks river? Or is this just something I have to get used to? I have just moved my boat from Destin where we are used to going 10-12 miles for 140 ft water....

Fishlady, first of all, welcome aboard. It gets crazy around here, but there's good reliable information.

Thats just how it is in this part of the world. There is no deep water close to St. Marks. 10 miles out of St. Marks will get you to 40 feet of water.
What was I supposed to do today?

You might see 35 in isolated spots, but you'll have to run at least 18 to get consistant 40 feet. Once you hit 20 feet its about a foot per mile drop.

One thing we have that you don't have in Destin is an abundance of live bottom. Less fishing pressure also. We just don't have deep water.

Unfortunately 140 feet is a long way from St Marks. There are plenty of grouper in much closer, you'll just need to alter your style- light line and light leader. The good news is that you can use those left over 12 oz weights with your buoy marker. :-)

8) I really appreciate everyones help with my question, I really like the "nature" aspect of the St Marks area, and we really-really do enjoy the lack of jetskis, and a zillion people...
