Thoughts on Pin fish traps

Post by neckmoe »

Curious as to how many folks use these? I've got a couple I'll put out if I know i'm gonna be out for a few days in a row. Also what areas and depth's do yall put yours out in? What areas would you avoid( crab trap lines)? I usually target 5-8 ft of water in the general proximity of a well know point(aka bouy or the like). I'm thinking of getting a few more with this the upcoming Snapper season. Thoughts?
I don't know when I'm gonna catch my next fish but I know when I do it's gonna be awesome!

I usally drop mine in about 100 ft of water near where I am going to sabiki bait. Use northern mackeral. Be sure to squish them a little so some of the good stuff is starting to leak out. If you are in a good spot it will have a bunch of bait in less than an hour. We work a couple of sabikis while we wait and then rebait it for the next day. By the next day it is usally full. If you catch any octupi, they are great bait, Just throw them on ice and use a little piece at the time. Scamp love them.

I have only had one trap stolen that far out before.

They work great. If you can set them out the day before, there's not a faster way to fill the livewell. Pogies, fish carcasses, old chicken parts...they all work. All I will tell you is don't be surprised if someone helps themselves to your bait or trap. Just like everything else these days, if some POS finds it, they'll steal it. If you can help it, mark your traps as inconspicuously as possible.
