chumming

I would'nt call it success because I attracted a bunch of sharks down by the lighthouse. Last week, while the wifee was out of town, so I put 4-5 LY's in the food processor and turned them into a peanutbutter like paste. I then put the paste in a 20oz plastic bottle and capped it of with the cap. When I got to out on the water, I tied a nylon string around the kneck of the bottle, stabbed it several times to make holes, and sunk it in the water. When I squeezed it several times and created a really nice chum cloud, and a bunch of small charks showed up within 15 minutes. I cought more sharks than catfish or trout. It was fun, but for trout I wouldn't try it again.
That was my experience....

chum
We chum when catching bait to go off shore with. I mix Kozy Kitten cat food (the cheap greasy stuff) with canned mackerel and canned sardines. I get the sardines in big round cans, not the flat squares ones (they are too expensive. I mix everything together and fill about 3 inches in the bottom of a gallon size glad bag and freeze it. I took a 4 inch piece of PVC pipe about 18 inches long. I capped on end, drilled a small hole in the cap, inserted a rope and tied a knot. On the other end I added a threaded collar with a threaded cap. I drilled 1/2 inch holes about every inch on the pipe. You simply unscrew the top, drop in a 3 inch round sleeve of frozen chum, replace the top and hang it over the boat. Pay attention to which direction the slick is moving. We catch plenty of pin fish right behind the boat in the slick. If things slow down, give the rope a good pull and a cloud of chum is released. A lot of times we hook spanish, trout, sail cats, and sharks on the pin fish rigs. We never really tried it for anything other than bait, but, if it attracts bait, you know the rest of the story.
I usually mix 24 cans of Kozy Kitten with 8 cans of mackerel and 8 cans of sardines. Makes about 20 bags. Sometimes we add porgy oil if we have it.
We tried dry cat food once but all we caught were a bunch of sea gulls. The food floated as it was released and drew in every sea gull within 10 miles.
