Epic Day Offshore- Indian Pass 7/10/12

Post by Jhults11 »

Well, they extended Red Snapper season another week so we decided to take a trip to Indian pass to target some "GROWN" Red Snapper. We left Tally at 5 am and had ice, bait, and gas from crums and were headed southwest with the boat in tow by 630. Upon araival at Indian Pass we couldn't help but notice how slick it looked in the bay and we knew it was going to be calm, with sh!t eating grins on our face the whole way out. This was a good thing seeing that we were going 30 miles in an 18 foot scout bay boat :-D . We launched and headed south at 30 mph in the light 1 foot rollers outta the southwest. About 1 mile from the hole we saw a nice looking weedline and seeing that doug nor I have caught Dolphin before we just had to stop. Once stopped we saw a couple free swimmers and I immideatly grabbed a spinning rod and fired a bucktail in their direction. Dolphin on. As im pulling in my phin', Doug and my other buddy noticed the depth finder had some nasty structure on the bottom and reading fish, so they decided to drop down the big rigs. Once their baits hit the bottoom in the 130ft mark they were both railed by quality fish. Three minutes later, 20" dolphin in the boat, 22" Scamp, and 12 pound Red Grouper in the box....first three lines in the water :smt007 . We decided to make another drift on our new secret honey hole we just found and 3 drops, 3 more 6-10 pound Red Grouper in the box. After 30 minutes we had our limit on grouper (boxing 9 Red Grouper to 12 pounds, 2 gags, and 1 Scamp). After that we headed the 1 mile south to the Snapper hole. On the first drift on the Snapper hole we caught 4 Snapper rivaling any snapper I have ever caught. We fished 3 holes over the next hour in that area and didn't keep anything under 9 pounds with our biggest going 16 pounds. Oh yeah, on Dougs last drop he hung and landed a 40 poud AJ....and got his azz worked..lol.. :smt005 !! After doing a final count we had our 12 grouper limit and 6 Red Snapper limit and 1 nice Mango by 12pm!!! We decided since we were in a 18' bay boat we better start heading north as to beat the sea breeze. We did decide to look for weed lines on the way in though. We hadn't even gone a mile and we saw a 200 yard weedline. We pulled up and there they were. I bet there was 100 dolphin under that weed line. In 45 minutes we had 30 Dolphin in the box and cut ourself off at that (atlantic bag limit even though there is no bag in the gulf). After that we hauled butt in at 31 mph in the light 1 foot rollers still coming in outta the southwest. This is definitly the best offshore trip of my life, and can't wait to do it again. -Tight Lines Boys
Final Tally:
30 Dolphin (Mahi Mahi)
9 Red Grouper to 12 pounds
6 Red Snapper to 15 pounds (throwing back 15-20 keepers)
2 Gag Grouper to 5 pounds
1 Scamp @ 22"
1 40 pound Amberjack

Tide dancer- 1/4 ounce red/white bucktail, tsunami brand...the hooks aren't great but when ur catching 1 pound chickens it doesn't really matter...we also used small chunks of LYs on a 1/8 ounce jighead...just as effective.
Fishn fool- Iv been meaning to get those stradics to you but havnt had the time...no worries, ill swing by soon and drop em off...thanks.
Jobu- We only used about 65$...very economical...the truck gas down their from tally was about the same...def an affordable trip between 3 guys!
