Night fishing

Post by Salty Gator »

A buddy and have been talking for the last 2 years about doing some nighttime flats fishing. He pulled the trigger and made the call for early sat am. We both went to kevins and picked up some things we thought would work at night( I got a glow topdog and some glow gulps). The moon was almost full and little cloud cover made for a good night. High tide was 4:20, and we planned to fish from around 2:00 to daybreak. We put in at he fort around 12:30 and ran to the lighthouse canal to net some bait. Needless to say everything is harder and takes longer in the dark. We had a little trouble finding bait. But left for our spot with a few finger mullet, pilchards, pinfish and pigfish. We ran to a rockpile east of Cobb rock. Again finding the spot in he dark took a little longer than expected. We tried to throw topwater plugs but there was a carpet of grass as thick as I have ever seen. Konrad threw on a finger mullet and had a lower slot red on his second cast. I tossed a finger mullet out and bam, upper slot red. We caught a few more until the livies ran out. We also caught a few 3-4' blacktips, a few hardheads, a couple trout, and a big ladyfish. Right before the live bait ran out, I switched to cut ladyfish, as I had caught a few more fish and he netted all the bait. They seemed to like that better. We picked up a few more until the tide went slack, then it slowed down. We moved to an oyster bar in the mouth of the river and found a spot without grass. Threw topwater plugs and only caught a 3ish # bluefish that got eaten up to the gills by a 5-6' shark. Didn't get my new glow plug though. We hit the hill about 7:30 pulling out while everyone was putting in. Hit Savannah's for both of the $2 breakfast specials. 2 eggs, huge pile of grits, toast, bacon, and 2 small pancakes for $4. Hard to beat. We only took a few pIcs, when the action was the slowest, and they aren't great because it is dark. Total was 12-13 reds. Two around 20" and the rest between 25 & 29". It was a cool trip.

To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

So, we all think some of the same thoughts.

I want to fish in October or November with a harvest moon, less weather worries and cooler.

I'm struggling with what was "Best". The fishing story or the breakfast story. Thanks for both!
