U.S. Destroyer collides with Oil Tanker

I find it absolutely amazing that radar didn't paint a tanker.

I concur. I used to be a FireControlman in the Navy and there is no reason why the radars(plural) should not have had that contact the entire time. Faulty equipment? Doubtfull with the multiple radar systems they run on those ships. Hard to imagine that the Aegis let them down.

The skipper of the USS Porter has been removed from command after his ship collided with an oil tanker just outside the strategic Strait of Hormuz

The commander of Naval Surface Force Atlantic announced Cmdr. Martin Arriola's relief of command on Thursday.

The collision earlier this month left a breach about 10 feet by 10 feet in the starboard side of the USS Porter, a Norfolk-based guided-missile destroyer. No one was injured on either vessel.

The Navy says Rear Adm. Dave Thomas reassigned Arriola to the staff of Naval Surface Force Atlantic because of a loss of confidence in Arriola's ability to command.

Porter's new commanding officer is Cmdr. Dave Richardson, the former executive officer of USS McFaul.

The USS Porter is undergoing repair in the United Arab Emirates.

From the news photos of that boat, I saw a lot of rust and just plain lack of maintanance for a navy ship. Somebody was not doing their job(s). Scary that they are the ones protecting our interests in that region. I agree, the head man's head should roll on this one....
