Shark question

Post by Bayfisher »

Last weekend my 8 year old son and I were fishing near the mouth of Ochlockonee Bay. All of a sudden his drag was screaming like crazy. I turned around to see a huge splash and my first thought was he hooked a Tarpon. However, after taking a ton of line, the fish jumped a couple more times and it was a big shark. It appeared to be brown in color, although it was a hundred yards out when it started jumping. I have caught a number of sharks but have not had one jump like this one. Any idea what kind of shark would look brown and jump like this?

It ended up breaking the line, but that was 30 seconds of pure adrenaline for my son (and me)! Just wish I could have gotten a picture of his face when he realized he hooked a real big fish.

Most likely a spinner shark. Fairly common this time of year. They and blacktips will both jump when hooked and make long runs. They're a lot of fun on tarpon-size tackle with plugs or bait. Be careful if you get one to the boat, though, 'cause they can twist and snap at you easily. A long dehooker works or simply cut the leader as close as possible and say good-bye to that plug.

Are spinner sharks brown Capt Dave? I thought they were grey like a black tip. They are fun to catch. I had one tail walk and spin like a billfish on DIR last summer.

Brownish to light gray. They do have some coloring on the tips of their fins like blacktips. It could have been a lemon shark if it was really brown, but they're not as prone to jumping as the other two. Either way, they are fun.
