ratcheting trim on merc 9.9
Anyone know anything about the ratcheting trim components on the newer mercury tiller motors?
Once I lift the motor all the way up to trim it to its lowest position, it stops somewhere around the 3rd from the bottom. Might have to take it to a mercury service shop.
Anyways, if anyone knows anything about these motors I'd appreciate it.

My 9.9 Merc four strke tiller requires you to fully raise the motor and when it releases, it will release to the lowest point available, then you can rachet it up to the raised position that you desire.

Yeah, that's what mine does under normal circumstances. But when letting it down it stops on what I'm guessing is the 3rd position. I just went out and looked a little closer and it looks like I'm missing the piece that goes in the "123" slots.

Yes, that is adjustible and has a hinged shaft on the end that locks "in" your lowest wanted motor position. I leave mine on the lowest position and just ratchit it up to where i want it.

right, i leave mine at the lowest position as well, but it will not ratchet down that low anymore. it stops at a position that leaves the motor trimmed too high to let it plane out. its been a long day on the water for me so ill take another look at it tomorrow.

The only other adjustment is the "lock or release" lever on the starboard side of the engine. I have what lets call "the broken bolt" set at the lowest point. When i raise the engine "all the way up" and release it, it will go all the way down to the "broken bolt's" set position. Then i can raise it, or ratchet it to the point i want it. I cannot lower it without raising it "all the way up".

upon closer inspection (in daylight) i found the "broken bolt" as you describe it to be missing. #14 in this diagram "lever assembly-tilt return" is the part im trying to describe. it must have jumped ship somewhere on the way to the river...literally. thanks charlie tuna for your patience.

shucks, the link doesnt work. but without this lever assembly, the motor will not return all the way down. the only way to get it all the way down is to get out of the boat and push the plastic doo-hicky all the way back while letting the motor down. its a dangerous operation. one i dont want to perform again.
