Oyster Bay 9/22 - 9/23

Post by fishfalcon »

Fished Saturday morning with a friend and his 5 year old daughter who "woke up early and wanted to go fishing". Checked the pinfish trap and we were in business. We made a few drifts and picked up a few shorts that all seemed to come off a transition point so we eased up and anchored on the edge of the transition. I used pinfish and my buddy was using gulp and for the next thirty minutes we pounded the trout much to his daughter's delight. About half of them were short, but we boxed 7 trout including a 19" beauty that the 5 year old reeled in plus a bonus 24" spanish mackeral. The bite died and we ran back and were making pancakes for the rest of the crew by 9:30. We ran to the rock garden around lunchtime to close out scallop season and the water visibility was terrible. We picked up about 2 gallons and ran back in checking the tripods, but no one was at home. Dinner was sauteed trout covered in scallops and we decided we would fish again on Sunday. We ran out a little later on Sunday and fished the same area. Again we had about a 40 minute flurry of activity where we caught a fish nearly every cast, but unlike Saturday the fish were all 14.5" cookie cutters. Finally my buddy broke through with an 18" keeper and I boxed a pair of 16 inchers on consecutive casts. With work responsibilities looming and two boats to clean, we called it early and headed home. Another great trip to the coast.

Oyster bay is "Good Fishin" grounds.  An area with less fishing pressure, cause most folks don't know where it is.
