leaders

First of all , I use 6 to 8 lb test line, and tie a 15-18 inch piece of florocarbon in the 15-20 lb test on, tie directly to the line, no swivel, I think it makes a difference...now for me , if the trout are really spooky, I will forgo the leader, and use a hook no lead and put live shrimp on, texas rigged sort of, seems to work.

I usually use 8lb or 10 lb mono main line.

If connected to a cork/cajun thunder I will usually tie on 17 lb fluorocarbon leader. If I then get lots of cutoffs due to spanish mackeral or bluefish I will then tie on a 40 lb mono or fluorcarbon leader.

If connecting to a jig or other lure direct I usually do not use a leader unless I start getting lots of cutoffs. If they become a problem see above.

I usually do not have many cutoff problems though.

Also I pre-rig most of my jigs so I have both 17 lb and 40 lb leaders ready if I need to retie. I usually have about 10 leaders ready.

10 lb main line connected to CT to 40lb fluoro. Just in case some other critters are lurking about.

I like monofilament, so for trout and reds I just tie directly to the main line. :)

Trout Leaders

Post by Doublehooks »

I use either power pro or mono in the 8# to 15# range and I have recently started using wire leaders because of cut offs. Mirrow lures are very expensive and I'm tired of losing them. When using grubs or bait I use 20# flurocarbon leader.

My question is does wire turn trout off? I seem to get less trout hits with wire, based on trout caught. Since I started using wire I land more Spanish and Blues. Would I be better off using 40# flurocarbon instead of wire?
