alligator harbor

Post by luceror »

Took the trolling Mtr w me on my kayak. figured I might have along paddle back against the tide if I stayed late. Launched at the "ramp" of 98 this morn. still some ebb tide so I decided to paddle out nd save the battery for later. fished my way out past the sandy bbar at allPT. Lots of small bunkers flipping and pelicans diving--nothin but large sailcats under em--they were thick.
Didnt catch a good fish all morning. Ended up comming "back in" till I was in the middle of the harbors mouth at the offshore edge of the last shallow water bar/flat as u leave the harbor. The tide was smoking(last of the flood/fullmoon) I through a jig gulp out and hooked up .TROUT--IT was good action for about40 minutes. THe tide slowed down so suddenly , it was like a light switch. That killed the action. I looked around that area some thinking they just might of moved over a square, nothin.
Caght fish as fast as I could bring em in and recast for that 40 minutes.
Ended up w 3 keeper trt.(1 was 20")and 1! 22" red(pleasant surprise) Caught one other short red ,its tail was all Blue, the larger one had only the outer edges of itstail turning blue. I noticed this starting up a couple weeks ago.heard several theories as to what the blue tail is about, I leen tow3ard a spawnig symptom. Does anyone out there have any "opinions as to what causes this color change? I know of a couple people that have fished here for decades and dont even know what Im talking about!

We went out at Alligator Point Wednesday and Thursday and the water was actually getting clear. At Dog Island Reef, we could see the bottom in 3 feet of water. Wednesday, we went to Dog Island at the west end and i was shocked that the island had been cut in half! Had not been there in about 6 years. What a difference. Thursday, we went out to fish Dog Island reef, but one of the passengers got green on us and we came in early. Caught a few sharks and some sailcats. No trout, but did not really spend a lot of time there.

Is the red arrow the place you were talking about?

No, I was pretty much in the middle of what I would call the mouth of the harbor. If u were running out of the harbor, following the Main channel markers, Iwas alittle offshore of onothe markers where the channel makes a hard right back toward 98. i was fishing on the offshore edge of the bar that that sharp rthnd turn keeps u from running aground on. I followed that sand bar in the direction toward 98 to where it started to dissapear and the water was ripping through the difference in depths. There was some grass on the bottom off the edge. Couldnt see it , but I ncould feel my jig dragging across it as it was the tide was sweeping it.
Nice chart pic. If it were a little bigger I could detail u better. where that pic come from?
Hope this gets u in the ball park. Only fished AH2x. Caught trt both times in that general area ,but on opposite tides.

I know what he is talking about becasue I saw it last week also. The description may be a little exaggerated but still unbelievable. Toward the west end at the skinniest point of the island, storm surge from TS DEBBY moved the beach into the bay. There is a 100yd long dock on the bay side that now has a beach under it. It want be long before the island will be cut in two unless its fixed.

I know the spot, I guess I haven't been by since the TS. Sucks for the houses there but that's gonna be a killer fishing spot when it finally has a big river running through it.

When we were there at high tide, there was water completely across the island at that point. The two houses that used to have beach in front of them on the gulf side are now in the water of the gulf!

Like above said, the whole section of the island there has been moved about 100 yards toward Carrabelle. It will not be too long before the tidal action makes a clean deeper cut.

I wonder if I can stake claim to the "new" island between Dog and St George? :-D
It's got some nice houses on it... :D

The area between the red lines are where I estimate the island is now. The space between the blue lines was completely underwater at high tide with water rushing over it.

If you know the area, you know there used to be little dunes there a few years back. You can see the 2 houses there are now in the water. One never was much, but the one with the dock was a nice place.

Just a reminder guys. I saw a guy with a kayak get a ticket last year when he mounted his trolling motor because he did not have the kayak registered and numbered.
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!
