Record redfish

Post by Salty Gator »

After reading Jordan's report about hooking a monster red, I started wondering. If you catch a red that is possibly a state record fish, what do you do? You can't posess it, so bringing her to approved scales is out. Do you measure length and girth and calculate weight? Just wondering how you would prove a record fish. Does anyone know? Thanks

True, if you fish in his holes, you can not possess the redfish you catch. They will be too short. :smt005

If you keep up with this forum, we all know how protective JT is about HIS Holes! Just a reminder that as the old saying goes, possession is nine tenths of the law (at least while you're camped out on them). JT might consider putting "No Trespassing" signs on his holes. :-D Of course, that would necessitate identifying them to all the world as good fishing spots!

Would it have to be landed in whole condition? That latest batch of dynamite I got tends to tear them up a little bit. :o :-D

Don't forget, if you tie a nanny goat to JT's boat the night before, you will not have to worry about seeing him out on the water to claim "his" holes. :smt005 :smt005 :smt005

Ok, I'm no stranger to throwing in smart-azz comments, but DO find Salty Gator's question a very interesting one and would love to hear if anyone has a serious answer. I see that tarpon in tournaments are taken to shore just long enough to be weighed, but that's usually tournament based with the hunt being for record-sized tarpon whereas red tournaments are for largest LEGAL reds and possession isn't legal for carrying the fish back to shore. Not asking because for a second I think I'll run across it, just a darn interesting question. Guessing that older FL records / records in other states for fish that weren't tightly restricted in the past get a great deal of protection from being broken once laws become more restrictive.

I'm still not sure how one would get an official weight without possessing the fish. I'm pretty sure those tarpon guys have tarpon tags that allow posession to get it to the scales. It seems to be impossible to get a weight without posession which is illegal. I'm with you BBG, guessing most records came when you could keep big reds, but not sure about that either.

Lots of pictures, lots of measurements, lots of pictures of measurements. Pics of fish on weighing device. Witness. Lie-detector test, etc.
