What anchor for a

Post by MarkM »

G3 1860. I've been using mushroom anchors but, they don't hold when windy. How much and what size chain? Thanks.

8 lb fluke style works well enough around here and are easy to find. You can get them galvanized, aluminum, vinyl coated with or without chain. Walmart has the galvanized and vinyl coated with chain. If you want to keep the weight down, you can get the more expensive but much lighter aluminum ones. Fortress is the expensive one or their Guardian line is a little cheaper but will work just as well for smaller boats. For shallow water anchoring (less than 20') length of chain doesn't matter a whole lot. A short piece (4') is all you'll need. Some guys don't even use chain for shallow water. If you buy one without chain, it will probably come with instructions on chain size and length. My Guardian recommended only 6' of chain even in deep water.

For waters less than 4', I use an anchor pin. I have the Stick It brand 8' and it works really well in winds up to 10 and is a whole lot less trouble than an anchor. It also makes a good emergency push pole.

I'm not wanting to spend the money for a power pole, the anchor pin may be worth looking into. I was thinking fluke and I saw some at Academy. They had cheap tinny looking ones. They were the cheapest and with a little chain may work okay.

Hey Mark,

If you are down in Wakulla, stop by AMS and see Gordon, he can put you on the right anchor set up and will give you a fair price. I imagine he'll even match Academy's price as well (don't quote me on that). He hooked me up with my system a couple years back.

Well if you do want to spend money get a Minn Kota trolling motor with i pilot. The spot lock will replace your anchor for fishing. Power pole is a one trick pony.
My electronics cost more than my boat, motor, and trailer.
