St. Andrews Bay Slam 12/1/12

Post by Chalk »

Prior to the slam day - I left work around lunch and got the boat ready and tried for a quick shake down trip close to the house. Launched BSAM and speed off to a spot that is receptive on rising water - receptive in terms redfish. To my surprise the redfish were somewhat scarce but the trout were in their place and taking a liking to the jerkbaits they were being fed. Quickly got a limit of trout from 16" to 19". Decided to make a run west with the with the winds working in favor for a certain bank I made the run. Runs are shortened when BSAM can cruise at 60 8)

Second spot set up nicely with the wind...didn't take long before I got my first red. Had a few misses and short strikes....ended up with three reds before calling it a day.

Caught the fish on Zman jerkbaits on the new built Chalk stick - 7'6" MHX designed for soft jerk baits...Stradic 3000 from South Goergia Outdoors...love that rod...going to build a few more it's the bombdigidy

Friday evening I said I was going for a slam on purpose - flounder, trout and red.

The plan set and the full moon allowed me to sleep in on Saturday...launched again around 0800 and made a long run to the pass. Took about 20 minutes and I got 1/3 of the slam secured - the hardest part - flounder.

Wind and sun was at my back so stayed in the area looking for a red and trout. Saw two reds, but they were on the chip and wanted nothing to do with me. Fished on and ended up catching a 16" trout and getting my 2/3s of the way to the slam.

Decided I needed to make a move...so I moved 17 miles to the west for the last part of the slam. Wind was southeast at the pass, but was still north when I got to location B. It was about time for the onshore breeze to come in, so I piddled around for an hour throwing at mullet schools. The wind stopped and it got like glass and the sand gnats were on me...I fired BSAM up and moved a bit to put me in the slot with the wind. Fish were laid up and weren't cruising...only way I could get them to bite was to bump them with trolling motor and cast to them. They would eat, but I missed the first three...finally locked into a nice 26.5" red on the new rod - slam complete.

Started to leave and get home for the GA/AL game, but started picking up a few good trout and saw a few more magnum trout. Fished up near a little cut and flipped the jerkbait into it and felt the solid thud....laid into the fish. I was worried the new rod wasn't going to be able to handle a big red...it was time and game on. Fought the fish for about 5 minutes and finally got my hands on it - 31 inches of red :-D

Slam complete...awesome two days of fishing - traveled 50 miles round trip to do it - nothing broke, caught fish - life is good
