East of Palmetto Island 12/9/12

Post by fishinfool »

I know this is a little late, but I have been busy. I launched around 7:30 this past Sunday. There was a nice incoming tide and the wind was about 3mph from the NW with water temp of 62. I headed East to a Red spot just East of Palmetto Island. The water clarity was intermittent. While searching the shallows for some Reds in about 2-3' of water, Ii picked up a nice 17" Trout on a Chartreuse Twitchin Rap.

After some more chunkin and windin and various lures, I moved to my "go to" Redfish spot. The water was a little cloudy there and there were no Reds taking what I was offering. I did manage to entice a 19" Trout to take my Twitchin Rap though.

I was just about to head to the hill at Noon-ish, when I decided to try a deep water spot (10') that has been producing the past couple of months. Just after arriving I saw a big Red swimming near the bottom and decided to try there. The water was very clear. I threw a jig and Gulp shrimp and picked up some short Black Bass. I then saw some baitfish working the surface a couple hundred yards away and every once in a while something was harassing them. Using the trolling motor I eased to within casting distance and threw and threw with no success. Just about to quit, I decided to tie on a spoon and chunk it at em. After two more short Black Bass, my rod doubled over and the drag started singing. With 10lb test I was hoping whatever was on the other end would get close enough to the boat for at least an ID before parting my line. Some minutes later and a lot of give and take, I saw a Bull Red with my spoon in the corner of her mouth cruising near the bottom with little or no concern. She then started taking more line and we did the give and take for a few more minutes.
Well finally she got tired enough for me to get her boat side, allowed me a couple of pics, and release her.

My biggest Red ever, 38"
