St. Marks 12/29/2012 Inshore Slam...

Post by Jhults11 »

Decided to fish with my two best friends today, one of whom which is in town for a week for the holiday. We looked at the radar this morning and saw the big blob was east and decided an early start was the way to go. We pushed away from shell island fish camp at 730am to a brisk 20 knot North wind. Went up the St. Marks and fished north of shields within 1/2 a mile all day. We fish hard all day and were rewarded nicely. Every hole we saw deeper than 12 foot had fish. The bite was very tide dependent today. If it wasn't moving, they weren't hitting. We fished jigs/gulp/live shrimp all day. I think we saw tallykenj and there awesome pontoon boat out there today too. We ended up catching over 100 fish easily. We took home 35 sand trout over btween 12-17" (threw back twice that), 3 Speckled Trout to 20", 3 big whiting, 2 mid slot Redfish and 1 big flounder. We all had a blast and cant wait to do it again.
Final Tally:
35 Sand Trout
3 Speckled Trout
3 whiting
2 Slot Redfish
1 Flounder

Thanks for the report. We wanted to go fishing but didn't because of the wind forecast. A nice mess of fish!

I did the river thing in jan once with shrimp. But we caught sandtrout that were only 8-10"s long. Did you anchor or troll the holes. I dont have a trolling moter.

We anchored on the side of the river near the hole and casted back into the hole. The sand trout were killing anything we threw..shrimp, gulp, swa, surketch jigs, it didnt matter theyd hit it. We usually get small sand trout in the winter but for some reason this year they are on the larger size...average fish in 13-14' with some 17"ers in the mix. Good luck with it
