Sheephead - get while you can

Post by Redfin »

The sheepshead are here- get out and get em while you can- we fished a secret spot in 35 feet out of Keaton- with fiddler's. Other folks there using shrimp couldn't get em to bite- we managed a 4 man limit in 90 minutes.

Are these as tough to clean as people say? I've never caught or eaten one.

The hard part is getting through their rib cage bones. They are very thick and very hard. One of the few fish where an electric knife is very handy.

There are bunch of videos on how to clean them. I think my favorite is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7h9IyhqNYM. I had no problem doing it using a regular knife, with a sharp blade and point.

As for hooking the fiddlers, I just hook them clean through the body.
