A hunt to remember

Post by micci_man »

And won't be forgotten.

I went to a friends dad's funeral today. It was great (if one can be) and some things were said that hit home. After hearing some quotes from the preacher that Mr. Cecil had said in the past, just before it was over I decided to go turkey hunting. On the way I had a good feeling about it. Kinda strange. I don't care for afternoon hunts but I wanted to go sit in the woods and soak it all up if anything. I got settled in and ready at 4:18. Made a few calls and sat. Shortly after I catch movement at 11'o clock. Gun pointed I'm ready. It was 3 jakes, first I've seen this yr. I watched them for a few and they passed at 20 yds going to 7'o clock.

I gave them a some time to get away and soft called again. Just a few minutes go by and I catch movement at 2 o'clock. I see what I think is 3 turkeys, just movement here and there and see a red head on the first in line. Not sure really what they were, jakes or gobblers I caught a glimpse of a full beard on one of them about 40 yds out but behind cover and I saw the head of a second one and it was a red too. They weren't coming to me but paralleling me from what I could tell. Still only seeing parts of them the first two got by me without a shot. Just then I see one step in an opening and I could see the top 1/3 of his body and I clucked and he stopped. I didn't know anything about him other than he had a red head and a long beard was in the group so I shot and he fell and flapped once. I looked at my clock and it was 4:40. A 22 minute turkey hunt with 3 jakes and 4 gobblers seen.

This one is for Mr. Cecil Williams

10" beard and a 3" beard
1 3/8" and 1 1/8" spurs
