Got to get one soon, has anyone tried the new hand held models ? Need
to decide between a fixed mount or one of these, any feedback would be
helpful, thanks!
What Don said I started out with a hand held, and it seemed like I would have to be in sight of the person I wanted to talk to before I COULD talk to them Go with the fixed mount

What Don said, what Tom said, what Wevans said. I have two handhelds(ICOM -soso, and a Standard Horizon -better), just ordered a Standard Horizon fixed mount eclipse - about $130.00
Get a fixed mount for everyday use. Much better range. Use the hand held for backup. You always need some kind of back up. I have both types...and use both of them...frequently.
My wife used the hand held to call me when she came to the hill for me to grab her and sometimes the youngun It worked pretty good for that, fish till they holler "sometimes I didn't hear them " then come in ta get em, instead of meeting at a certain time and waiting for em ta get there

Just curious: Why is the fixed mount better? The battery power? It is hard to imagine a fixed mount on the 13'er, but I know I often will call out a radio check and not be heard. Or maybe y'all are just ignorin' me!
