Handheld GPS recommendations?

Handheld GPS recommendations?
I'm looking to get a handheld GPS as a back up for offshore trips. Any recommendations? Don't need a high dollar rig, just looking for something as a good back up.
Re: Handheld GPS recommendations?
Color maps are a must. Almost all modern handheld GPS include color these days. So your choice is really about water proof or not waterproof. I recommend a waterproof unit.
To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

Garmin

In expensive, waterproof and it floats.

I used to own a Garmin 76 but wasn't real impressed with the speed. Seems like it took a while to acuire satelites, update the map when your scrolled over, or zoomed in and out,etc.....I'm guess he newer ones are a little faster?

Re: Handheld GPS recommendations?
Only JT would have as many gps units as he does reels. I guess he needs them for all the spots he has marked.

Re: Handheld GPS recommendations?
It doesn't matter how many he has. He can't see any of them.reelbad wrote:Only JT would have as many gps units as he does reels. I guess he needs them for all the spots he has marked.

What was I supposed to do today?

Getting ready to purchase one of the GPSMAP 78 units, is the 78s or the 78sc worth the extra $$$? Why would you need the s or the sc over the standard 78?

Re: Handheld GPS recommendations?
I guess that's where I'm a little confused. Does the 78 not have any maps. or not as detailed as the sc units? If I get the standard 78 unit will it show any type of charts on the water? Or will it be a blank screen like my 72 (non map)?BeachRum1962 wrote:Most of the difference is prepoaded maps. Re: Handheld GPS recommendations?
Here's the way I understand it, Superiorrifles. SC comes with preloaded coastal marine maps. S and SC have compass, barometry/altitude, and unit-to-unit file (waypoint) transfer.
You'll pay at least $100 to buy the maps separately.
Dude, get the preloaded color maps.
Fishin' is the mission.

Re: Handheld GPS recommendations?
If you have not pulled the trigger, another great Garmin handheld is the Montana 600. You can add Bluechart maps to the Montana for $100 or add Google Earth/Bing Satellite images for free. I will send a link on how to load satellite images if you are interested.
You can see a couple of Montana screenshots of the area around the Apalachicola River delta:
