Keaton Beach 4/22-4/27

Post by ddb »

Had my annual trip with my friend Bil from NC down to Keaton Beach. We usually go in early May, but bumped it up a bit this year. Fishing was good, with some great days mixed in, but a bit off from what we are used to. We caught 'numbers' of trout, but not of the size that we typically pick up during our spring trip. Weather was outstanding, so we can't complain. We picked up a lot of trout in the 18-22" range, but none of the gators we typically are able to find. Water temps early in the week started out a cool 63, but warmed up into the 70's by the end of the week. We experienced better bites during the windier, cloudier periods. We through everything we had at them, including a little live bait, soft plastics, plugs, gulps. At times everything worked 'a little', but shut down shortly after. Bil had some pretty good success for reds on topwater, I on spinner baits. He also had some good luck on the MirroDine in the EC color scheme. Some of our better fish:

We had a mixture of slot and overslot reds. No problems with too many over 20" trout :-D
Also picked up some spanish, blues, and at least temporarily a rather large shark :)

A good report! Sounds like you had a good trip.

We were down at Keaton Friday and had our limit by 2:30. Our bite was steady but slow. All 17" to 19", none over twenty which was good.

We had a good day Friday as well. Spent most of the day hunting for reds with a box full of trout.

Peng joined us for a couple of days mid-week and fished out of his boat. We had one o.k. day followed by a great day. Every day was different.
