St. Marks 5/15

Post by milto »

Looking at the weather a few days in advance, we saw that the wind was going to be in our favor yesterday. Being that we don't have an offshore boat, we knew this was our opportunity to hit some of the nearshore reefs. We started our day off by dropping the kids off at school at 8 and then picking up pops and the boat right after. After all said and done and picking up some awesome food at Black Bean (Jerry's) we got to the lighthouse channel around 10:30. We tossed the net and landed some nice baits. So, off we were to our first spot, and what ended up to be our only spot!! This was what it looked like out there when we got there...

When we got out there we did the whole chum bag thing and were fishing the bottom with the baits we caught at the channel. Started off a little slow, but before we knew it we were getting slammed. The first fish, I was fortunate enough to be the one to hook it. I lay wood into him to get him away from the bottom, just in case it was that grouper I was in search of. I get him close to the top and BOOOOM!!! GROUPER!!!

Unfortunately he was right at 22" and I don't play when it comes to being close, so back in the water he went. So, back in the water my bait went and probably 10 minutes later boooom, I'm on again. This time he wasn't fighting like the last one. He was running away from the boat, and my initial thought was cobia. Had a good fight going and a couple minutes later this nice one came in the boat. As I thought it was the COBE, just a short but still a fun fight!!

After playing with several sharks from dogfish to a black tip and even a bull, George and I spot a couple of cobes running on the top about 20 yards from the boat. Fortunately, I had just got done rigging up the baitrunner for my dad with a new bait. So, I tossed a nice pin about 5 yards in from of where they were and handed the rod to my dad and told him to hold on. Not even 30 seconds later it was GAME ON!!! After a good 10 minutes of fighting and dad chasing him around the boat, pops hooks up with this nice LING!!!

One of the coolest things we saw all day to me was this tiger shark. I even ended up hooking up with him. Although only for about 30 seconds until he broke me off.

After that it was probably close to 2pm and the wind started to pick up, so we decided to head in. We stopped on the east flats and let the wind push us in. George ended up with a nice 19" trout on the ole popping cork & gulp combo. I had been working the topwater plug the whole time and had a couple blow ups, just no takers, until I finally landed a nice 20" trout.

We ended up meeting of with ole Rainey and after a while we had to hit the road. So we dropped off George to finish the day with Jeff. I don't have a detailed report for them, but I can show you some of the photos to conclude one great day for not only myself, fiance, and dad, but turned out to be a great day for everyone...
