Visiting in Fall, Advice requested

Post by abclay »

Hey all,

Long story short, my wife forbade me from bringing my boat on our "Family Vacation" any more. She agreed, however, to allow me to go away several times each year with the guys to do some fishing, etc without her and the children.

I remember long ago coming to Shell Point with my grandpa and spending all day catching trout and having a blast.

My goal now is to spend an extended weekend in the fall (Mid October) at Shell Point and I'm curious as to what we can expect by way of fishing either in the flats or near-shore. We may be open to hiring someone for a day to take us out and show us the ropes. I know very little about fishing the area and would like to be taught to fish the area properly, respecting local customs, etc.

My boat is a 20' Proline CC that pushes about 18" of water

Any advice that can be given would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

abclay

To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

Great area to fish both nearshore and the flats. Watch for oyster bars. If you are serious about a guide try Captain Randy Peart
(850) 421-8049
Great guy, very mellow and laid back and knows where to find fish.

Thanks for the advice! I will keep Capt. Peart's number.

Are there any good Oyster bars in the area? Nothing like kicking back a few after baking all day!

On a serious note, that's one of the reasons (keeping clear of the oyster bars) I'd like to hire someone local to spend the day with us.

If you stay at Shell Island Fish Camp at St Marks, visit Deal's Oyster Bar for oysters, but I do not believe they serve alcohol. There are other bars that do right down the road though.

Good folks, clean and cheap accommodations. Bait and good advice always available. Straight shot in a well marked channel to the flats.
