The 5' 8" is a casting rod.
I think a Saltist if a good reel for that rod.

Conventional. It isn't a spinning rod. Guess I should have stated that. Sorry.

That's what I was thinking too, a saltist or the like ( if there is one). But as far as casting, it's labeled as a casting/jigging/bottom rod but it's pretty stiff,

Saltist is a great reel. Torium is also a great reel. Canyon is a newcomer(so to speak) in the conventional jigging reel line up. They are definitely worth a look. The HS15 high speed is very impressive. At $179 list it won't break the bank either. http://www.canyonreels.com/jigging_reels.php

I got the Saltist 40 a good while back. It's held up with no problems. I got it for bottom fishing just before I started trying jigging. It works fine for either.

I think Ranaman has one or two of the canyon reels.

Is it the silver or black and gold 40?

I've read some mixed reviews on the Canyon's and several screw failures like ripping out.

Mine is one of the original level wind plain silver ones on a Shimano Tallus TLC60XHA. They didn't have all the fancier ones when I bought it. It my favorite reel so I've never replaced it and I don't get to go offshore enough to warrant getting one of the newer ones. I did just read some mixed reviews on the Canyon reels. I'd stick with Diawa or Shimano right now.

I have both the Torium and the Saltist 40. If you are going to spend the money then I highly recommend getting a 2 speed reel. You don't have to slow the boat to reel in trolling plugs and if you hook a whopper on the bottom you have far more leverage with the fish. In fact, for the really big boys, I just leave the rod in the holder and let the rod do the work.
