Carrabelle Offshore 6/22

Post by Jhults11 »

Dad, wife, and I decided to take a last shot at snapper so decided to fish out of Carrabelle. Splashed the boat, got bait and ice and were ready to hit it. Noaa called for 1-2 foot seas so what could go wrong :-? Well we rounded the tip of dog and were met with a lovely sloppy a$$ mixed up washing machine. Decided to stick to state waters and search for gags instead. Hit a few spots and only pulled short reds and gags. Was getting disappointed we couldn't make it out south to 85-90 to go slam the big ARS we wanted but the mood lightened up when my wife hooked something big. We were sitting on anchor bottom fishing and she hooks something that took off like a rocket...I immediately thought Kingfish and I wasn't disappointed. I was a little worried though seeing we were bottom fishing with 80 pound mono leaders. Luck was on our side and after several nice runs I stick the 21 pounds schooly with the hook and we've got smoked fish dip for the next few months. A little later I hung an even bigger one on a flat line with wire but go figure that one pulled the hooks  . Either way it was my wife's first King Mack and dad and I were glad we weren't going home empty handed. It sure would be nice for Noaa to be right sometime...my new noaa equation is multiply their forecast by about 2 and that's about close. Hope everyone had a good fishing weekend. Tight lines-

Congrats to your wife

We tried to go 100' Saturday (after Friday's catch/bite)and ended up in 80 due to the slop. 1 ARS in 80' and we culled them in 100'. The fish are where the bait is and they are deep. We caught many 21-21.5" gags in state waters, go figure. Friday was the day weather wise. Glad y'all got a chance to get out and give it a go.

Thanks...the seas look good in the pic because it was taken behind dog island on the way in  It was too rough to take one offshore...
