Ok so I didnt get the oportunity to grow up fishing as my dad was just not into it. Now a ton older I got hooked on fishing then moved to Alaska and got hooked on fly fishing. Wife, New kid and I moved back.... We bought a boat.... Ive spent plenty of time in South Florida and have the mangrove thing figured out but my home waters have me stumped.
been to Piney Island 3 times now all with lack luster performances part of that i am sure is the weather an non ending rains. using Jig heads, Gulp, spoons. Have launched from rock point? shot across channel then fished bank all the way around to almost where first marked oyster bars then strait to some oyeter heading to Oyster bay. Tried strat up high tide went today and fished lowe tide and swing to high tide. at 2 headed to hill hit little lagun strait across from landing and pulled out a 19" red.
Been to turkey point shoal fished high tide to swing to low, cought blue fishe around high tide then nothing else the rest of the trip.
I don't mind dong grunt work and hunting for spots but would love a point in the right direction... Or is it just the water right now

I THINK IT IS JUST THE WATER IS NOT SALTY ENOUGH. LAST TIME I WENT WE DID NOT CATCH A THING UNTIL WE WERE AT LEAST 10-12 FT. OF WATER, 3 MILES OUT OF ST. MARKS.

Fished it sat. and didn't have much luck. Cut lady fish on some bars produced a few small reds and more cats than I could count. That area seems to get tougher than anywhere for me when it's this hot. And the rain probably doesn't help.

Hoping fishing will get better as we move into the fall. Seems the fresh water and heat has moved the fish out into deeper waters. Sounds like you are doing the right things. I like it when the family fishes together....it'll get better.

I fish those waters a lot and this year has been tough with terrible water clarity and all of the freshwater. I try to fish moving water (tide coming in or going out) and am always looking for baitfish. That being said, a full morning of fishing with my crew on Saturday produced a total of 2 legal trout. We used everything from crankbaits to live pinfish and hit a bunch of spots.
