St George island vs Cape Sand blas

Post by djw79 »

Planning a trip this weekend to do a little kayak fishing. Looking for a place to throw up a tent and make a weekend out of it. Was thinking about St George Island or Cape San Blas (state park campgrounds). Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on which area could/would typically produce the best results. For trout and Reds. I appreciate any info provided. Thanks!

If the wind is out of the W, NW, N or NE, it gets rough behind St George Island. Plus with the rivers running high, it's probably real dirty.

St Joe Bay has alot more land to break up the wind, and the water is usually clear.

Weather aside and unpredictable, the water is not good a SGI this summer. I have a place there and have been down a lot with not a lot of good results. It's just too much fresh water in the bay. SJB, on the other hand has been better this summer. I try to trailer where the fishing is best and it's been SJB over SGI for sure.
People that catch a lot of fish fish a lot!

Cape San Blas is the better choice this year. I was at SGI earlier this summer and the water was dirty and not much but sharks and ladyfish.
Ducks, turkeys, flats fishing. Who has time for golf?

Hopefully the camp ground on the Cape has some openings. It usually requires advanced reservations so make sure to call first. Stop in at the Cape Trading Post and see my buddies John and Todd. They can give you an idea of where the clear water is and what is biting. I talked to them this past weekend and they say the middle section of the bay is clearing up.

Hands down, Port St. Joe Bay will offer more than Apalachicola Bay right now due to all the fresh water. The state park is great, but usually most fishing other than bottom fishing is better toward the back of the bay. Presnell's has a campgound and it is located on the back end of the bay. Another alternative if all sites are booked around the bay is the Indian Pass campground. Of course, with that one, you have to pass the Indian Pass Raw Bar coming and going, which can be a distraction! :-D
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!
