Miccosukee Gator Hunting 9-18-13

Post by DEMON »

Filled one of my gator tags Wednesday night on Lake Miccosukee. It was a beautiful night on the lake with a big full moon a cool breeze keeping the bugs to a minimum (if there is such a thing). My partner and I left the ramp about dark and were quickly intercepted by FWC. After a quick check by a courteous and professional officer, we were on our way. We looked over many gators over the next couple of hours but didn't see anything over 6-7'. Finally late into the night we spotted a lone set of eyes that had promise. We were able to slip in close enough to see it was a good one before it disappeared into the dark depths. My partner shut down the mud motor and we drifted over the spot and eased to a stop. I got out the weighted treble hook that was attached to a hand line and tossed it just beyond the last spot we had seen the gator. I slowly pulled the line back to the boat and suddenly felt the weight of the gator at the other end. I set the hook and the water exploded right beside the boat. We were almost on top of the gator and for a minute I was thinking this thing was going to get in the boat with us. Luckily the treble had struck in the jowl area which allowed me control the head. My partner then got two harpoon shots into it and we finished it off with the bang stick. She measured out at 8' 6". Not a monster but a good eating gator and a good fight. Many thanks to my partner (and his duck boat). One more tag to go. Maybe the "Monster" is still out there waiting on us.

Plenty of biggins still out there but they are getting skittish of boats. If you can hunt during the day/evening hours you won't need to go past the ramp at Reeves.
