Nothing seen like this before!
My two son's and I had an awesome day at Keaton, October 17th, Thursday. We didn't get on our spot until around two thirty that afternoon and left to come back in around five. Three hours fishing was the most we could have done but I would think less than three hours.
I've seen fish feeding on balls of bait but only isolated instances. That afternoon it was happening all around. As many as five pods could be seen active at any time from the boat. A spot would be on fire and die down to begin again several hundred yards away. It was happening all over! We saw the minnows they were feeding on and it looked like glass minnows by the thousands.
We soon learned not to throw into the fray. Those tooth critters were in the main fray of threshing water and would break you off real quick: Blues, Spanish Mackerel and Lady Fish with some trout but they were mostly out away from the action. That was where we learned to fish with the best results on Speckled Trout and Sand Trout. We even caught Gag Grouper!
In less than three hours we came home with 14 Spotted Trout and 24 Sand Trout. Threw back some good Black Bass, Spanish Mackerel and Gag's. Caught or hung seven different species of fish. Everyone was feeding at the table.
Was thankful none of us fell out of the boat! Anything caught fish, any way it was presented. I tried gigging, the cork and plugs to catch fish all three ways.
An awesome trip!

Nice work. Some of my best trout and reds came from under schools of macs and blues eating minnows.

We got into a similar situation near Dog island yesterday, except a ( I hope) novice boater with 2 anglers on front pulled right into the center as I was working the edge. The school busted into a few smaller schools and it wasn't the same.

Sounds like a great experience SS-342, what depth were you working?
Re: Nothing seen like this before!
Pods were forming anywhere from six feet to four feet.ddb wrote:Sounds like a great experience SS-342, what depth were you working?

Nice. Try fishing low and away from the boils for glamour species
