Cedar Key offshore: Macs & grouper. Sat 10/26/13

Post by Big Bend Brian »

Friday night my son Casey & I headed over to Cedar Key but first we stopped to attend the Gainesville Ducks Unlimited Banquet and we had a great time. On Saturday morning we waited a bit for the winds to drop as the flags around the marina were standing straight out. Around 11:30 am we finally left the dock with lighter winds (as predicted).

We first hit some offshore 10 foot deep summer trout grass flats but only caught one short trout (lost a number of rigs to Spanish). We then moved offshore to Seahorse Reef and the Spanish were ready to play. Drifting and casting we again started losing more jigs on 25 lb leaders from the macks. Trolling drone spoons worked much better than casting jigs and Gotcha lures and we only lost one small diving plug. The Spanish were hungry for small drone spoons. We kept enough for the smoker and a few for some friends.

Fun!

No brainer fishing

We left them biting and then moved off to 24 - 26 feet of water and started trolling over broken bottom with Mann Stretch 25 type lures. Within 40 minutes we picked up five (5) gags, a lizard fish, and a small blacksea bass. We kept three (3) gag to 26 inches and decided to head back in.

Fun day

Inshore and offshore water temps were 68 ˚F and 72 ˚F respectively. On the reef and in 26 feet of water the weeds were not too bad trolling wise. Gotta love the Big Bend waters!

Hoo Yah!!
