Moderated 20 gauge demo.

Post by Cranfield »

This unscientific demo was carried out this morning, as my youngest daughter is spending the weekend with us and has an iphone.
My mobile doesn't even take still pictures and I don't have a video camera.

Its a very still day, overcast and started heavy rain just before we took the film.
You can hear the rain on my daughters rain hat.

First shot is a 12 bore 30gms No6 shot, the second shot is an unmoderated 20 bore 28gms No6 shot and the third one is the moderated 20bore 30gms No5 shot.

The distance from camera is about 20 yards.

You can sure hear the difference! Was that your point?

Must have been back in July when we were having all the rain. Was that young peanuts in the field?

Your daughter did a good job of filming. A very still hand!

Impressive! I'd love to have one. I have 3 acres and live in the county but I get calls from neighbors when I dispatch raccoons and possums in the yard. :(

Also great to hear your voice.

I am approx 4842 miles East of Panama City Beach. :-D

It was a sound comparison demo and the crop in the field is Winter wheat.
What doesn't come out well from the video is that there was a distinct echo from nearby farm buildings from both unmoderated shots, but the moderated shot barely echoed, probably because its a much "flatter" sound.

PA that was the wrong answer, you do not win a cuddly toy.

If I knew how to edit out the gaps between shots to make them more consecutive, it might have been a better demo.
Preloading the guns would also have helped, but the sudden heavy rain rather threw us off track a bit and I was close to cancelling the exercise.

The moderated 20 "bore" is definitely a lot quieter. The sound wave you can hear traveling for a few seconds on a normal shotgun is not present with the new gun. I think the market for them here in this area would mainly be for plantations and skeet and trap clubs.
As more town and city folks move out into the edges of farmland I imagine this will become more of a necessity here too. I would be interested to see how these moderated guns make dove react on a dove field too.

I use it mostly for crows around the dairy farms, where there are large barns, nearby houses and woodland where any noise gets amplified by the "echo" factor.
The flat sound means that the shot sound is much quieter and there is a minimal to nonexistant echo.
The crows, normally very wary birds, are not spooked by the noise at all, they are still however spooked by movement.
So I don't move until I am about to shoot.
Often I can't get the gun loaded fast enough before other targets present themselves.

I have used it decoying in open fields and there (especially with a good wind) the noise is almost completely dissipated.
Pigeons are certainly not aware of it and will often spook because shot birds are falling, but then circle back over the decoys as though they are wondering what happened.
These are wild woodpigeon, not the town square multi coloured type of pigeons, so they are not usually that incautious.

Please explain the "moderated" part. What is done to the gun?

This is the post showing the gun broken down.

Most of the normal gases from the discharge are vented through the holes in the barrels into the tube, the last section of the tube contains baffles with absorb the sound.
