Mono Vs. Flouro Carbon

Getting ready to tie on some new line and have both mono and flouro for leaders. Have never used flouro before and was wanted to get some thoughts on which to use. Thanks in advance.

Thanks all. Quick follow on. Does the mono backing help with reducing loose braid and bird's nest?

Do you really think fish can spot the difference? Let's see: Red hooks, black hooks, split rings, pink lures, etc.

the backing will limit the braid from slipping on the spool keeping the braid from digging down into the spool. another good thing about backing is you can stretch a average 150/200 yard spool over a couple of reels. i would use some cheap mono like Cajun line to back my reels.

I use 20# flouro leader on mono line because I don't lose as many lures to the oysters and the rocks. Just tougher than 8 or 10 mono. I also use it on the mono backed braid reels as well. I back with Ande. I fish with Ande too though.

Prove it to yourself. Take a clear glass of water and dip a piece of each. See which one disappears. Use a quality brand of flourocarbon.

I've got a fishin buddy who refuses to use fluorocarbon leaders. Our hookup rate is about the same, but I bring more fish to the boat than he does. The abrasion resistance of fluorocarbon far surpasses mono.

This is good advice. It might take 500 yards of braid to fill a big spinning reel, and it's kind of a waste since most of that will never touch the water. And I've actually had to retrofit mono backing to a couple braid-spooled reels that started to slip after a year or so.

I always tie mono straight to lure with a loop knot on topwater. I don't like how the flouro tends to sink and make walking the dog more sluggish with a leader. I have to retie a couple times during say a early summer morning, but that is the nature of a loop knot anyhow.

Flouro will sink, so it will tend to mess with the action of your top water lure. mono stretches so if you make one of them mile long cast on the flats like we most do and a fish slams the lure as soon as it hits the water you won't get a good hook set. braid doesn't strectch at all and flouro strectche veryyyy little. mono or straight braid would be the best to use for top water, top water is a reaction bite, therefore the fish won't get a good look at the line as if you where throwing a jig.
