Yammie 115 starter issue

I have a 2002 Yamaha F115 with an odd starter problem. 99% of the time it is good to go, but from time to time it has a problem restarting after running. I run out from say Shell Island to the East flats, fish a spot, want to move again, and it will not start. Let it sit for 15 mins, and it usually starts up again. When I say not crank, the starter turns, but the motor will not fire. I re-squeeze the bulb and sometimes tilt the motor up and down. Gas is good and I have a 10u water sep filter on it.

Any ideas? I am about to re-power as I do not like the idea of a twerky motor.

If it is not a fuel problem, then I would look at spark. If there is a way you can check spark when it is acting up, do that. I think you will find there is a coil problem. Ignition coils that are breaking down are usually temperature sensitive. If there is a condenser in the ignition system, that could possibly be the problem too.

If the starter is engaging and turning the flywheel,you might try the manual choke to see if this helps.
Otherwise,The Fool is correct.
Coil breaking down.

I would by pass the kill switch first....coil failure normally results in a rough running engine, not ability to crank. Unless you have a single coil, but waiting and then it works sounds more like a corrosion or battery or connection issue. I would start with the simple stuff - clean electrical connections first

I've had the same problem. It's common on yamah f115. So you might call their customer service. I've owned 4 yamaha 4 stroke motors. 60 2-90's and 115. I've found that if you let off the key when it first sparks it won't fire and run everytime and it'll take several more times to get it running. The f115 would always take 10 minutes then it was good to go. I'm like you didn't like that one bit, but I always thought it was a vent problem.

This is going to sound like a silly question, but do you have a Jack Plate? I had the same issue with my 150 Yammy four stroke. I am by no means smart when it comes to motors, but see if this makes sense. I noticed that after fishing inside for a number of hours with the jack plate all the way up, that the motor would have issues starting. With my limited knowledge I deducted that the fuel was having a difficult time riding the fuel hose up to the motor. If I lowered the jack plate it would fire right up. Don't know if that makes any sense mechanically or not. Just thought it might help if you have a Jack Plate. Other than that, I would clean terminals and check battery.

JUST SPRAY SOME W-D 40 ON THE STARTER GEAR SHAFT, ALSO SPRAY THE COGS ON THE FLYWHEEL, IT WILL GET RID OF ANY DIRT ETC. THAT MAY BE THERE.

I have the same engine and had exactly the same issue a couple years ago. Replaced the cable from the battery to the starter. Problem solved. My mechanic told me it is a pretty common problem.
