Boat trailer

Post by micci_man »

A guy at work has a 17' Tracker, V-hull and he is in bad need of a new trailer. His current one is steel and all but rusted out. I told him I'd ask on here for any recommendations as to where he could shop for one. He is wanting an aluminum trailer but that will depend on price.

Thanks for any input

He got a price from Mike's and called Coastal. Coastal was too busy and siad that they would call him back this afternoon. I hope they do. He also got a price from Tim Nobles down near Tampa on another recommendation.

Thanks again

Alright, he got prices over the phone from both local places. One place was $600 higher than the other but also told him that they could not sell him a trailer unless they installed breaks on it for an additional $500. Reason was that his boat/trailer combined weight is over 3,000lbs but it isn't. Any of you been told this when buying a trailer? The other place didn't mention this at all to him.

Having brakes on trailers with a total weight over 3000 is the FL law. I wouldn't think that his boat and trailer would weight more than that though. I would have him take the current boat trailer out to the truck stop at 90/I10 and get them to get a certified weight on the current trailer. Then call the one shop back and give them the current weights.

If he were to get a trailer without brakes and the boat/trailer was ever found to be more than 3000 lbs. insurance might not cover things in the event of an accident.

The trailer would have to weigh a hell of a lot in order to get a 17' Tracker and it over 3000#!! :hammer:

It could weigh over 3k lbs and still be good as long as the boat/trailer doesn't exceed 40% of the towing vehicle's gross weight.

(3) BRAKES ON ALL WHEELS.—Every vehicle shall be equipped with brakes acting on all wheels except:
(a) Trailers, semitrailers, or pole trailers of a gross weight not exceeding 3,000 pounds, provided that:
1. The total weight on and including the wheels of the trailer or trailers shall not exceed 40 percent of the gross weight of the towing vehicle when connected to the trailer or trailers; and
2. The combination of vehicles, consisting of the towing vehicle and its total towed load, is capable of complying with the performance requirements of s. 316.262.
(b) Pole trailers with a gross weight in excess of 3,000 pounds manufactured prior to January 1, 1972, need not be equipped with brakes.
(c) Any vehicle being towed in driveaway or towaway operations, provided the combination of vehicles is capable of complying with the performance requirements of s. 316.262.
(d) Trucks and truck tractors having three or more axles need not have brakes on the front wheels, except that when such vehicles are equipped with at least two steerable axles, the wheels of one steerable axle need not have brakes. However, such trucks and truck tractors must be capable of complying with the performance requirements of s. 316.262.

Bottom line is his rig is under 3K and he was told by the one place they cannot sell him a trailer without putting breaks on it. I could be wrong but that sounds like a racket to me......

I don't think I would use that place if that is what they are trying to sell.
