SGI - 8 June 2014

Post by Terrier »

Fished St George Island SP today, mostly Rattlesnake cove. Slow for the most part but did end up with a 24.5" trout. It came on an olive/chart/tan clouser (that fly has been working this year!) I also got a 16" trout on the same fly, as well as three ladyfish. I also lost a huge trout - had a good long fight on my 7wt, when it wallowed at the surface and did a head shake. It looked to be in the upper 20's in length. I had it close a few times and saw a huge spotted back with a large tail. It was bigger than the 24" trout I landed. It's the ones you miss that keep you coming back.

The water has cleared quite a bit, except where the southwest wind churned it.

24.5" trout:

Very nice report. Would love to see pic of your clouser. What hook and lead barbell size did you use? How are you fishing it?

Here's a picture of the clouser - it's the one on top:

It's tied on number 2 Gamakatsu SP11-3L3H hooks with 3/16 real eyes or small lead dumbbell eyes, with gold, copper and pearl flash. I normally blind cast to likely spots with intermediate line - either Cortland Little Tunny or Wulff Bermuda intermediate.
