Anyone fish this area and care to give a little insite? Do you fish the river for trout,reds,flounder? Never fished the river or the flats out from it but thinking about giving it a try maybe.

The Fenholloway has a terrible reputation for being polluted. The paper mill has been dumping their waste water in it since the mid 50's. It's supposedly all safe now, but I don't know anyone who actually fishes in the river. I do, however, know a lot of people who launch from there and fish the flats and oysters in the vicinity. An alternative in the same general area would be Big Spring Creek. I also know a lot of folks who launch from there. The fishing is top notch at either location, just depends on how you feel about the pollution.

The water is still pretty muddy out there from all the rain .I see people fish the river some in the winter and the river isn't getting dumped in like it used to in the past but still is.there have been many upgrades at the mill the last few years showing a lot more grass starting to grow out from the river now.

Yes, I fish there regularly. It is my favorite place! Fish both sides of the Finholloway channel out in the gulf, around Rock Island and out from Rock Island at a place called Candy Cane. Eagle's Nest trout grounds are back toward Spring Warrior and can be good as well. You'll have to hunt them but we limit out most every trip often times with in a few hours. The dark water doesn't seem to slow the bite. A Hot Spot Map can be helpful.

I would not eat a fish out of that river for anything. If the paper mill quit everything today, it would take years to wash all of that junk out of the river.

What about the boat ramps. I see two on the map. They look small with not much parking. Is one better than the other for launching?

You can't be a true outdoorsman and not be for clean water and air.


However, I am just not a part of the excessive tree huggers and climate change mongers, who seem to put out more untrue stories than not.

The results of tests years ago of the Fennholloway were not pretty. As I recall, the PCB's were off of the charts. The paper mill used to dump untreated black liquor (left over chemicals used to cook pulp) into the river. It is not nearly as noticeable now, but the plants on the banks of the river used to show signs of pretty heavy chemical burns. The smell of the river used to be terrible at times with huge chunks of foam floating down the river.
