Anybody Checked for Scallops at Econfina?

Post by big bend gyrene »

Sure DON'T look for it to be a hot spot this year but have company coming in to town over the next month and wonder if anyone's finding even a single scallop?

Know I could go down to Keaton, but prefer closer launch of Econfina, know the waters better, and will be fishing more than scalloping. Just won't likely jump in and swim if nobody can say they've found at least one or two.

Even if there were any found there...it would be hard to know if someone was telling the truth or not. People get too territorial over their scallop spots and everyone says there are no scallops at any of their favorite places to go. I'm going to try and go next weekend, weather permitting, and will post an actual report in hope of helping other people out.

Hewes Man, I've got my own specific areas I like to check... NOT looking for spots, at least not more specific than "Econfina." ;-) COMPLETELY understand about staying quiet on spots, but folks on this board have been pretty straight forward with area reports thus far, speaking to results at St. Joe, St. Marks, and Keaton... just no word out of Ecky.

I'm extremely skeptical anyone will chime in with much of a solid report. We've done well in past years, but after the freshwater dump last year it was so bad we found A scallop... as in a SINGLE scallop during a summer dive on a previously decent spot.

Heck, someone says they found even a few would give me a reason to pause the fishing and show my company the scallop game. No one has found a solitary one out of Ecky, prefer to stay in the boat and fish.

Haven't been yet myself, but from the reports I'm hearing, you'd probably have more fun catching fish than scalloping out of The Econfina. The reports out of Keaton are mixed, some are finding them, but most are just spending a lot of time looking. I don't think it's worth going when it takes 4-5 hours to find a limit. I did hear of a few being found in front of Adam's Beach, but that's probably a longer run than you're wanting to make out of Ecky, plus the folks I talked to didn't even get their limit. All the reports I've heard from the Spring Warrior area have been negative, and it seems like the farther north you go, the less people are finding. But, it may be worth looking, never know, you may find the new hot spot. It's still early in the season, last year it got slightly better into August. Let us know if you find em. Good Luck.

And people don't lie about where they catch fish

Not a doubt on that, but will say this for BBF... lies on specific spots, sure, but shared good intel on general areas such as Red Yakker provided CAN often be found on this board.

Find any or don't, I'll definitely report back if we jump in. Again, my guess is no one is finding any out of Ecky, but can't believe that at least a soul or two on the board haven't jumped in to beat the heat and confirm that they are / aren't there. We have a big enough fishing morning, I'll likely jump in, even if quickly and alone, to do just that.

I didn't mean to suggest that there isn't valuable info shared here. Most know what to take w a grain of salt. I really think most people purposefully don't mention the specific area fished, but don't lie about it. However I've seen people put in at Lanark and write up an aucilla report.
Seems the scallops are thickest near Keaton. Makes sense there would be some between there and ecofina. Good luck, hope you find em

Grass was too short, didn't see any when I was there Saturday, and the 8-10 foot Hammerhead I saw there kinda deterred me from getting in the water...
