Trolling motor corrosion_HELP
The plug (female end) of my trolling motor is corroding. I just had it replaced for the same reason and now the new one is showing green corrosion after just a couple of trips. It is not a saltwater trolling motor. Can I spray with silicone, put some marine grease on it? or something else? Any of you dealt with this? Any help appreciated!!

Mine does the same thing and it is a saltwater motor. I spray it from time to time with electrical contact cleaner. Not sure it does much good but it hasn't failed on me yet.

I know I am going to catch a lot of grief from the safety nuts on this - I had the same problem with my last two boats and eventually removed the plug altogether. I connected the wire ends directly to each other and sealed the connectors with heat shrink. Problem solved. No more corrosion, hot connector plugs or stalled trolling motors.

What plug are you using?
2008 Key West 196 Bay Reef
2008 Yamaha 150

I hope you used an inline fuse and not just straight dirty connections like I use.Steve Stinson wrote:I know I am going to catch a lot of grief from the safety nuts on this - I had the same problem with my last two boats and eventually removed the plug altogether. Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

Corrosion-X is GREAT stuff.

Apprecte the info guys! I'll try the corrosion X. Hopefully that will solve my issue...

For any and all electrical connections, dielectric grease is your friend. It has the consistency of vaseline. Use it on all of your electrical connections & it will prevent corrosion but won't interfere with the electrical flow. Use on connectors, splices, bulb sockets, etc. You won't have corrosion problems even in a saltwater enviroment. You can get it at any parts store, Walmart, hardware store, etc.
