I'm having trouble recalling the conditions on the flats since I moved away for 5 years.
If I remember right winter is pretty bad with the wind.
I was thinking today that it felt cooler outside and I should head out only to find...
Seas 3 to 5 feet nearshore and 5 to 7 feet well offshore...occasionally up to 9 feet. Seas subsiding to 2 to 4 feet nearshore and 3 to 5 feet offshore...occasionally up to 6 feet this afternoon. In Apalachee Bay...seas 2 to 3 feet subsiding to 1 to 2 feet. Dominant period 4 seconds. Protected waters choppy. Isolated showers in the afternoon.
I guess the wind giveth and the wind taketh.
Fall?
Winter?
Spring?
Typical nearshore conditions different times of the year?

Re: Typical nearshore conditions different times of the year
Crazy today but it was really windy yesterday.
I could be way off but it seems like this to me so far:
Summer - calm
Fall - calm
Winter - cold
Spring - rough
I always check here before I go out.

Wish there was some type of alert that could go out like an e-mail each morning.

I agree I wis there was some kind of app or something that would give current gulf forecast like weather bug or something.redcodefsu wrote:Crazy today but it was really windy yesterday.

Windfinder works pretty well. Fairly accurate with the exception of Stoney Bayou station. ( I think the station is surrounded by trees or bushes or something)

Some nice marine weather apps for iPhone and probably others:
Intellicast Boating by Intellicast - just about anything you could ask for including tides, marine weather forecast, buoy reports, radar, warnings etc. all shown on marine charts. Not much for predicting winds other than the official marine forecast but a really nice overall marine weather app. Shows the marine weather zones i.e. coastal and offshore on the chart.
NOAA Buoy Data Reader by Verona Solutions - Buoy reports, tide stations etc. just data in an easy to read format, of course there aren't many buoys where we fish...
Predict Wind by Predictwind.com - Wind Maps, wind predictions, actual wind reports, this seems to show variations and locations better as it shows as a field of directional and speed illustrative arrows so you can see differences between a buoy 150 miles away and the coastal area most of us are concerned about. Seems pretty accurate to what I've observed including a strange event where a 15 mile wide swath inshore had the wind screaming parallel to the coast but 20 miles offshore was calm...
Windfinder by WIndfinder - lots of wind data including wind predictions plus other marine data like wave heights etc.
