St Marks River Trout

Post by woodstock52 »

I have been working a lot so I have not had a chance to fish in a long time. Has anyone been finding the Trout & Reds up the St Marks river? Or are they still hanging at the mouth/flats area?

Two Saturdays ago I caught a bunch of rat reds up the river. Live shrimp was the ticket.

Fished St. Marks River Sat, Sun, and today. Sat lots of trout, mostly shorts. Sun caught keeper red, black drum, trout. Today was super slow. Even ran out to the oyster bars toward the lighthouse without a single bite. Picked up two trout in the river around 16:30, only one was a keeper. All caught on live shrimp.

Thanks for the replies. I put in at the Fort at 1:00pm on Monday. Had no luck in that area, so I moved to the bars near the Lighthouse, no Luck there!! I tried again at the fort area, no luck!! So I moved up the Wakulla & fished for some Bass. Picked up 3 keepers in 30 min's,, but the No-See-Um's were starting to bite also, so it was time to GO. I did not have a single salt water bite!!!! I think I will stick with Bass fishing while we are in this warm spring like condition,

These weather changes will make them a little schizophrenic...
But next time fish up river from the fort - past the marinas.
The area near the power line crossing has traditionally been a great winter fishing spot.

I took the kayak up the St Marks river yesterday and did pretty good. Between a buddy and I we caught 3 short reds, 2 nice keeper trout, 1 short mangrove, 1 keeper black drum, and 2 sheepshead all in the same spot. The bite was really slow in the afternoon but really picked up from about 4:30-sundown. From now until the weekend should only get better as we get closer to the the full moon phase, I would think.
