Painting aluminum hull question

Post by Redbelly »

Has anyone ever done this with Rustoleum?

I am going to paint a hull that has factory paint . I will prime the bare places with zinc chromate primer.

What would be the best off the shelf paint?

Thanks :)

Did mine in hunter green three years ago.
Just cleaned, no primer.
Has hung in there except for the high traffic spots.
Hasn't peeled at all.
Brushed it on, but use a spray can every now and then to touch up the worn areas.
But then again, I got an beautifully ugly boat.

Sorifish on this forum did a great job on his this past year. Find out what he used and go from there. If he doesn't chime in here, call me at 509-3116 in Tally and I will give you his number.

Good Luck with your project. I would paint mine, but I have a bad habit of bouncing off of obstructions.... :-?

D O N O T PAINT ANY BOAT WITH RUSTOLEUM, DISASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE PAINTED MANY BOATS AND ONE I DID WITH RUSTOLEUM, IT DID NOT DRY FOR 5 WEEKS. AFTER IT DRIED , ANYTHING IT TOUCHED WOULD SCRAPE OFF THE PAINT. ENDED UP BY HAVING TO SAND AND SCRAPE OFF THE PAINT . I CAME BACK AFTER LEAVING THE BOAT IN THE SUN FOR A WEEK AND PAINTED WITH POLYURETHENE HIGH GLOSS, THIS DRIED IN ABOUT 6 HOURS AND STILL LOOKS GREAT TODAY, DID THIS 5 YRS AGO. AFTER THE PAINT WAS ON THE BOAT FOR A MONTH I WAXED IT WITH MARINE WAX . I RUBBED THE FIRST COAT OF POLY AFTER IT DRIED WITH STEEL WOOL AND BLOW WASHED BEFORE I PUT THE FINISH COAT OF POLY .
