loose wire on fishfinder cable

Loose wire on Lowrance Elite 5 DSI

I have a loose white wire on the boot/connector that screws into the back of my Lowrance Elite 5 DSI. But the unit is working fine, as far as I can tell. Does anyone know what the wire might be connected to, and how urgent it might be to fix it? Would it be easier just to replace the cable? I'll try to attach a photo.

looks like a mouse chewed it up a bit. Those look to be your power wires, so if it's working you've still got a good connection somehow. You can trace it to where the wires are connected to the circuit block and see what it's attached to. Maybe the broken wire isn't used. The black wire is likely the ground. You've got to have a power wire and a ground still connected or it wouldn't work. I think everything for your transducer is in the other cable. I'd tape it up good though. It's looks like the blue wire(which is probably your power wire) has a little cut in the insulation.

Thanks, reelhandy. I figured it must be the power cable, since it's the bigger of the two. You're right about the blue wire; I didn't notice it until I enlarged the photo. I'll see if I can get a good connection to the boot and then seal 'em with a little tape. I'll also try to figure out what's at the other end.

This stuff works wonders. It gets into all the nooks and crannies and provides a water-tight repair. It can be found at auto parts stores or West Marine. I use it in marine and auto applications. Some electrical tape around the liquid application after it has dried will add some support.
