Ever Re-button?

Post by fishinfool »

Got out at first light.Went to the East Flats Water temp 78, winds east/south east 10kts. With the incoming tide becoming high at 11:00 I decided to work the creeks in search of some reds.
I found one that was willing to eat my skitter walk after about 6-7 tries. He was a determined critter. First cast he missed it 3-4 times and on the 3rd try of the second cast I was able to hook up. This was one of the hardest fighting reds I have ever landed. Each time I thought I had him whooped he would peel of another 20 feet of line. Under the boat...around the boat...running side to side and away from me. Much fun! After a quick photo, back he went and swam away as if he had never been in a fight.
I don't know what I am going to do if and when I ever loose this plug. Nearly all the paint has worn off. The hooks have been replaced at least 3 times, but it keeps catching fish.

I moved around a little and went to a favorite spot. Got a 26" red to take my gold spoon. Now, I have had a few fish come "un-buttoned", but to my knowledge, I have never had one become "re-buttoned". During the battle the fish came near enough that I could clearly see the spoon firmly in the corner of it's mouth. This red did the typical runs and bull dogging maneuvers that I expect from them. As it came time to land the fish I noticed the the hook was barely attached to a very thin spot on the gill plate. Then I noticed that the hook point and barb were gone??? As I had no landing net, I decided to try to land this one by hand. From the pics you can see I was successful. Take note of the hook location and condition.
You can't really see it in the pic, but there were nearly identical gouges on each side of this fish about 4" long. They were pretty deep and starting to heal. They went from about an inch before the end of the dorsal fin to the base of the tail fan. I am guessing a gator tried to get a red fish dinner, but missed.
