Looking for a little advice from someone who knows fiberglass repair. My transom was rotted and the boat, 17ft CC wasn't worth the estimate, so I decided to DIY.
I cut the outer skin, removed and replaced the plywood by laminating 2 pieces to match the original thickness. I then have put the outer skin, that was removed, back on with heavy mat and used poly resin throughout the repair. I beveled the split line of original skin out to 3 inches wide and started with 3/4 wide strips of mat up to the 3" width of bevel. I increased widths to try to build up flat in the bevel as I added layers of mat.
Now I have read that poly resin may not be as waterproof as epoxy.
Should I put a few more coats of poly on the split and top it off with gel coat?
Will the poly be a problem in the future?

Epoxy has better adhesive qualities, therefore it is preferred by many. Poly is ok if the surface is prepared well and there is sufficient surface area for adhesion. A mat surface is porous and should be covered with some type of gel coat to prevent water absorption.
