Capt. Tom Stephens + Atticus + Mrs. Atticus Carrabelle 10-04

Post by Atticus »

Okay we got to Carrabelle and hooked up with Tom, went out and grabbed some live bait behind DI, went around the eastern end of DI out to between 30-50 feet to hit up a few spots

First spot not much doing, changed to another spot and got some snapper right off the bat...

Then the snapper bite shut down on that hole but the grouper bite picked up pretty well. I landed some red grouper and Ali was getting rocked-up but she got the hang of it after a while and put this fatty gag in the box. Biggest gag of the day IIRC

Image

Earlier I had told Capt. Tom that I wanted to catch a king but he said the water was too dirty. So after that big gag was caught one of our snapper rods takes off with about 100 yards of line dumped in about 6 seconds, well thats no grunt so Tom hands me the rod, I try to keeep the thing out of the anchor rope, he runs toward us, then he sees us and sounds, then I horse him up to us and Tom hits him with the gaff...

Image

So we were pretty pumped up and we were doing some more grouper digging and then the flatline that Tom had set up goes off again and I holler to hand that thing to Ali and I start clearing lines... Ali and Tom are aft and starboard while I am working foward and to port to get all the rods out of the way Ali gets the king to the boat and he sounds and by this time I am starboard looking for a rod holder for one more rod we had and there in the water is that king on the surfact headed aft in a hurry toward the props where he broke the main line :(

Well we are grouper digging more and getting toward a limit and then Ali hooks up with what she thinks is a short grouper but half way to the boat that 'short' takes off about 30 yards of bottom rigged drag and she is still thinking grouper and all she knows is to dig dig dig well she diggs a cobe to the boat...

Image

Just short the little punk is lucky because I was in a bad way to throw him on the grill.

Ali also grabbed another snapper- (we had changed into short sleves)

Image

So we were close to a grouper limit and we had a king in the box, a short cobe released and three snapper it was time to head in when an 8-foot tiger chases the final short gag up to the boat :o :o :o
I didn't get a picture because I was skeert but Tom throws him our flat-lined king bait and he swings on it but will not bite.

We head in and there are about 8 shrimp boats in front of DI just dragging and dragging so we go over there to look for hispanic macks but nothing doing except about 1,000,000,000,000 (thats a billion ;-) ) cannonball jellyfish.

We got her back to Capt. Tom's new marina of choice and took a look at our haul.

"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".
