St. Marks 12-12-15

Post by dombern34 »

this past Saturday was too hot to go hunting, so we took advantage of this summer weather and headed south. me and two other good friends decided we would fish St. Marks. went by shields and gassed up. Seen Mr. Don England and chatted with him for a few minutes before heading to the fort to put in, pulling away from the dock around 11:30 ish.

we hit a cut in the river first that just looked fishy IMO and of course have had success there in the past. ( not being secretive, I just don't know the name of it) so first few cast and our guy in the back catches two solid trout. 19 and 21 inches back to back. my other buddy hooked a red fish that seemed to might have made slot but pulled off right at the boat, (someone forgot the net of course)

so high tide settles down a little bit and I'm assuming it was a community hole because there must have been about 12 boats in that area but we left there and headed towards the mouth.

right in front of the light house is a bunch of old wooden poles maybe an old dock or something? well to the left of that is a sand bar with about 3 poles in the middle of the bar. that sand bar runs a little bit out from the shore, maybe 100-200 yards. we power poled down on that point and casted into a spot about the size of a bus and caught our limit along with about 40 plus ( I'm being generous on the 40 ) 14-15/16 trout. it was awesome.

we left them biting but the only thing they would bite was a 5 inch glow jerk on a jig worked very slow. tried the tourist rig, top water, suspending baits,.. nothing even a sniff.

we never tried up the river or out on the flats, there where boats everywhere but we ran out of time.

not sure if we just got lucky or if it was the Southern Custom Rods

yall go get em.

I went out Weds / Thurs last week, Weds w/ Pompano Georgio to Keaton area and Thurs a solo trip to St marks... I was riding towards Kitchens and a mullet boat was haulin' (gr)ass after me. I pulled over (is that a thing on the water?) and he was wayyy too excited to share about what you said above... i guess he wasn't fibbin' :o :o

he said he saw a "30" trout!!!" I asked him if it was a gar, he said, "son, I was born in this water, I know what a (*&% gar is!"
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn. ~Chuck Clark

Was good to see you Dom,sounds like you did well. The key is MOVING water, think you hit water at just the right time.
Hope you can make Take A Kid Fishing next year, the kids had a real good time fishing. Tallykenj and I were out just long enough to pull some traps, gotta have stone crab for Christmas.
Let's go fishn'
