St Croix rod

Post by onefishtwofish »

Bought a St Croix. Not top of the line, but decent rod (at home, can't remember the model) and noticed my line fraying after losing two fish to light pressure from me. Thought it was just bad line until I realized what was happening. The tip guide was causing the line to fray. It is in warranty.

So I have to pay $20 to get it fixed and have to ship it off (I don't have a rod shipping container laying around). Pretty sure I bought it at BPS with a gift card - otherwise I tend to go to Kevin's for new rods.

My rod guy here in Quincy passed, or I just would have paid him to fix it.

Pretty frustrated that it costs me $20 for a defective rod that is supposed to be a top shelf rod. Curiously my Ultralite Berkley is 5 plus years old and going strong.

Any suggestions on a shipping tube or a local to fix it?

The ceramic in the guide can get chipped, then it's razor sharp. I've had the same problem with top of the line rods and a custom rod with top of the line parts. I think it's one of those things that just happens, not really a result of poor work or cheap parts. If you contact st croix, they may tell you to go back to bps and get another or send you a tube. You can call Kevin's and see if they have a spare tube lying around or try UPS. Otherwise, I'd replace it yourself or have Dom fix it. Replacing a tip is so easy, I can do it. Good luck

Gary at Masters of Gun and Rod can repair it for you reasonably. Darryl Pack can do it also, I believe he charges around $20-$25. Dom with Southern Customs does excellent work also.

St Croix will sell you the correct size tips for about $5 each (I think they sent me my first one free after I broke one) I order 4 - 6 every so often (lots of St Croix rods that use the same tip guide) and they go on using a heat gun and provided powdered glue, I keep a couple of spares and a Bic lighter in my tackle bag for on the water repairs, or get it fixed locally.

I've been fishing St. Croix rods for several years now with no issues whatsoever. One set has been used in the kayak mainly and they've been put to the test.

Sounds like you just got a defective tip guide, Doc. Plenty of workable solutions offered here in previous posts though.

I usually fish with three females on the boat and sometimes their friends so lets just say they are not always as careful with gear as You or I might be. You should have seen me the day my college age daughter had her two friends out red snapper fishing and they were constantly dropping 10 oz egg sinkers on my gel coat even after repeated comments to hold the darn sinker when you reel it in  I guess it goes with the territory of having girls, but they love going and you won''t ever see them holding an anti-fishing/hunting/gun sign so it is worth it to me :D I think most of my rod tip issues came from reeling the jig head or popping cork up in the eye and popping out the ceramic so can't blame St Croix or Fuji for that. As long as they want to go with me I'll keep buying tips and trying to train them... if you are married or have girls you know the deal and you'll pray for me
