Trout in the river

Post by randymullaly »

Put in at the fort this AM about 8:30 and popped over to the mouth of the river. Made a few casts. My buddy picked up a short trout (but not by much) throwing a red fish magic with a white gulp. We trolled from there past the power plant around the third curve in the river and picked up a couple more. Trolled back towards the mouth and the same story with a couple more (one at 19") and back to the mouth of the river for one last keeper. Total was 6 fish with 2 keepers. 16" and a 19". Trout for dinner tonight and Ill be back out there on Monday. If anyone fishes the river over the weekend, Id be very grateful for a post!

  Good to hear they are still in there, me and a buddy got 10 nice ones Wednesday. What did you mean trolling to the mouth of the river? It's about 8 miles to the lighthouse from there. :o

I believe randy is referring to the old fort where the St. Marks meets up with the Wakulla River as the mouth of the river. Serious dedication and props if randy is trolling the whole channel out to the lighthouse and back up to the power plant!

Thanks for the assist TeamBaitWorm. Yes, I was talking about where the St. Marks and Wakulla rivers come together at the Fort.

That's what I thought you meant, where St. Marks and Wakulla meet. That spot is supposed to be a good place to fish, but all we caught was small trout and some ladyfish. My wife caught one of the biggest gars I ever saw there, it pulled the boat and was longer than our cooler. Put up a good fight, though.

You mind mentioning what kind of lure or bait you are trolling with in the river for trout during these cold weeks?

Thanks!

I was using a chartreuse Gulp swimming mullet (short paddle tail jig). Wanna troll just fast enough to keep the jig from snagging on the bottom.
