Questions on winter fishing the St Marks river

Post by Hit-n-Miss »

Only done it once with limited success. What is best? After several cold days, incoming or out going tides? Just looking for some tips. Thanks.

Anchor upstream downstream or on top of marked fish? Live shrimp or gulps on jig? Or even beside hole and drift bait through? Complete newbie on this time of year.

We caught most of our good trout upriver from power plant, casting deep holes with white gulp and green-glitter curlytails. They seemed to like the green ones better. Trolled the long straight-a-ways with the same rigs, kept it just off bottom. Fish show on your depth finder, fish those spots. Hope that helps, good luck. We fished 3 days into cold fronts and right before rain, water needs to be moving to catch fish.

I may try them next week, haven't decided yet. Plenty of cold, but not sure what all this rain will do to them.

I've thought about giving it a try too, how deep is the river? I'm not keen on hitting rocks, etc. Never fished out of the St. Marks knowing (or actually not knowing) what lurks out on the flats from St. Marks, but always thought the river itself is deeper with less hazards, is this right?

It probably averages 15-20 ft in the channel. Unless you are fishing off a massive fully loaded container ship, you'll be fine.
