steinhatchee help

Post by JShadwick »

Hello, I was just curious if anyone can give me any tips on inshore steinhatchee fishing? My parents have a place down there and ive grown up fishing but have never done great here. I usually only go as far north as Dallas creek and maybe only a mile or so south of the river. I think that I don't get far enough away from the river to do any good. Ill be renting the 24 foot skiff from seahag and plan on heading south towards the islands. Any input on how far south I should go? We'll probably be using popping corks with gulp shrimp. Any info is appreciated.

Going south I've found the area from Rocky Creek to Pepperfish to be the most productive so maybe a bit further than you've been going. I generally start looking for spotted bottom if I'm trout fishing with no real known hot spots. To start out I'd also suggest a combination of cork/jig and just a jig/shrimp combo bounced in the potholes, I seem to do better down there with the jig/shrimp without the cork... not that I've been fishing recently :(

By the way going South means rocks so proceed carefully...

I've been fishing in the Hatch for over 12 years... In my opinion fishing North out of the river is closer, easier, and fishing just as good than going all the way to Pepperfish.

Go further North than Dallus creek, there are miles of good grass flats due west of the mouth of Dallus Creek all the way to Keaton. The bird rack area always has trout. If youre dead set on going South, the area around Pepperfish Keys holds plenty of trout and reds. But be careful as it can get shallow and rocky around the islands. You don't have to worry about rocks much going North.

Sometimes popping corks wont be as effective as other lures. Get you a few mirrolures and spinnerbaits as well. Also try working a gulp on a jighead without the cork.

Thanks for the input. I know how rocky it can be down there, I usually don't turn south until marker 9 and north till im almost at marker 1. I live in Georgia but have been fishing steinhatchee for the last 10 years or so. But, now that I have a family I only get a chance to go once or twice a year now. Im taking some buddies so I wanted to get them on some fish. I may head southwest until I find some rocks in 10 to 15 foot water and see if I can find some rock bass, then head inland some towards pepperfish as we work our way back to the river. Thanks for any input or advice, Jeremy.
